Pastel sketches inspired by the music of Paul C Duncan

Sketching to Music
Using music as an inspiration I created drawings in pastel for a number of compositions by Paul C Duncan.

Highland Awakening
Here’s the postcard I painted for the Twitter Art Exhibition, a collection of postcards created by artists all over the world to be sold in Moss, Norway to raise funds for children’s books. I was inspired to paint the contribution by the piece Highland Awakening, composed by Paul C Duncan composed for me. I hope that the exhibition is a success. Thanks to David Sandum for organising all the twitter artists to contribute.

The Key to the Kingdom
I drew this based on a piece by the composer Arthur Bliss. I think it accompanies this new piece by The Kilted Composer well.

Shostakovitch String Quartet No 8
I’m increasingly using music to inspire my art work. These are details from three pieces based on the powerful string quartet by Shostakovitch. I immerse myself in the music and let the emotion flow through from hand to marks on the paper. It’s relaxing, almost meditative and very satisfying. These studies are pieces in their own right to me and if I paint to the music again I’d probably create totally different results. We shall see.

Pizzy Verb - The Kilted Composer
Lovely wee pizzicato piece. I felt this went well with my flower sketches.

Jammin’ in Hope Man #2
This is Ted at the drums in his recording studio. Very special afternoon today. We had the opportunity to join these guys jammin’ in the town of Hopeman, Scotland. Thanks to Ted and the guys - Wayne, Charlie and Eddie - for allowing us into the session and take part. I was sketching mostly then persuaded to sing Summertime! Never sung into a mic in my life! Paul was jammin’ away on the keyboard, so I thought I’d go with the flow even if I forgot the words. It was one of those amazing happenings and we’re going to keep in touch. Still buzzin’ from the experience.

Jazz Dog
Met a jazz cat at a car boot sale today, who bought some of my jazz cds. He couldn’t believe I was parting with them. Here’s Jazz Dog - a character of mine from a few years ago. I’m a dog person not a cat person. Dog’s are cool man!

Flautando by The Kilted Composer
Beautiful flutey birdsong piece. Imagine lying in a field in spring.
